Federal Job Preferences to Military Spouses

On August 12, 2009, the Office of Personnel Management issued guidelines that permit eligible spouses who apply for a federal job to ask that recruiters allow them to bypass the traditional hiring process.   An executive order issued by President George W. Bush established the guidelines in September, but the Obama administration delayed approving the guidelines as part of a review of all Bush-era regulations not implemented before the transition.  According to the Pentagon, hundreds of thousands of spouses could reap benefits from the new guidelines because roughly half of the 400,000 and 500,000 active-duty service members re-stationed each year are married.
